Performance and application of hydroxyethyl cellulose

The main properties of hydroxyethyl cellulose are that it is soluble in both cold and hot water, has no gelling properties, has a wide range of substitution, solubility and viscosity, has good thermal stability (below 140°C), and does not produce precipitation under acidic conditions. Hydroxyethyl cellulose solution can form a transparent film and has non-ionic characteristics that do not react with ions and have good compatibility.

 

① High temperature resistance and water solubility: Compared with methyl cellulose (MC) which is only soluble in cold water, hydroxyethyl cellulose can be soluble in both hot and cold water, and does not precipitate at high temperature or boiling, which makes it have a wide range of solubility and viscosity properties, and non-thermal gelling properties.

 

② Salt resistance: Because it is non-ionic, it can coexist with other water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts in a wide range. Therefore, compared with ionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxyethyl cellulose has better salt resistance.

 

③ Water retention, leveling, and film-forming properties: Its water retention capacity is twice that of methyl cellulose, and it has excellent flow regulation, excellent film-forming properties, fluid loss reduction, compatibility, and protective colloid properties.

 

Uses of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

 

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is a non-ionic water-soluble cellulose ether product, which is widely used in architectural coatings, detergent and construction. It has thickening, bonding, emulsifying, dispersing, stabilizing effects, and can retain moisture, form thin films and provide protective colloid effects. It is easily soluble in cold water and hot water, and can provide solutions with a wide range of viscosities. It is one of the cellulose ethers that has developed rapidly in recent years.

Latex coatings

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is the most commonly used thickener in latex coatings. In addition to thickening latex coatings, it can also emulsify, disperse, stabilize and retain water. It is characterized by significant thickening effect, good color development, film forming properties and storage stability. Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is a non-ionic cellulose derivative that can be used in a wide pH range. It has good compatibility with other materials in the components (such as pigments, additives, fillers and salts). Coatings thickened with hydroxyethyl cellulose have good rheological properties at various shear rates and have pseudoplasticity. It can be applied by brushing, roller coating, spraying and other construction methods. It has good construction performance, is not easy to drip, sag and splash, and has good leveling performance.

Polymer polymerization

Hydroxyethyl cellulose has dispersing, emulsifying, suspending and stabilizing effects in the polymerization or copolymerization components of synthetic resins, and can be used as a protective colloid. Its characteristics are strong dispersibility, the resulting product has a thinner "skin film", fine particle size, uniform particle shape, loose type, good fluidity, high product transparency, and easy processing. Since hydroxyethyl cellulose can be dissolved in cold water and hot water, and has no gelation temperature point, it is more suitable for various polymerization reactions.
